Early March to Chiang Mai/Pai or rather to the south of Thailand because of the burning season?

Full of anticipation, I have planned my first vacation in Thailand.
I will arrive in Bangkok on 24.02 and actually wanted to fly to Chiang Mai on 27.02 and a few days later go to Pai for a week.
Now in my research I have often discovered the problems of the burning season. I am afraid that this will mess up my vacation. Should I rather reschedule my vacation and go to the south of Thailand instead? Do you guys have any ideas? Where is a particularly good place to vacation as a vegan?
