Transport to Mon Jam (Mae rim district)

I’ll be staying at one of the tent accoms near Mon Jam, what’s the best way to get there with the consideration of having 2 big luggages (me and my friend’s)?
I was considering a songthaew but heard that it might be tricky communicating with the driver since I don’t speak Thai. I’ll be heading there around the late afternoon (4pm ish).

And also would love to know the best transportation (and most affordable) options in Chiang Mai for tourists? Be it getting around the city or outskirts.
