Thailand’s Reopening Causes a Surge in Illegal Border Crossings

On Sunday soldiers intercepted seven Myanmar nationals who illegally crossed into Thailand from the border town of Tachileik yesterday. The seven were caught by security officers on foot patrol in Ban Pa Chang Ngam in Mae Sai district in Chiang Rai Province.

Twenty more Myanmar nationals were arrested for illegal entry by Army Rangers from the Pha Muang Force in Mae Ai district of Chiang Mai also on Sunday.

Thailand’s border provinces have seen more than 3,000 migrants caught entering the country without going into quarantine during a crackdown on illegal border crossings in the past month.

Border officials say that the reopening of the Kingdom to vaccinated visitors on Nov 1 has prompted illegal job seekers to enter Thailand via the northern, northeastern, and eastern borders in search of illegal employment.
