Thai spicy?

Hey Phuket friends! My wife and I are here on our honeymoon and have absolutely been loving the food. However, we have noticed that even when we ask for food to be spicy, none of it really has been (even when confirmed by the waiter, usually a question like “Spicy is ok, right?”).

We love Thai food and love it to be spicy, so we’re wondering if there’s something we’re doing wrong? For context we are a western couple from Texas, so we’re kind of wondering if places are dulling down the spice because of that even when we say we’re good with high spice levels? We’re not wanting things to be extra spicy or anything, just the spice level the dish is supposed to be, or “Thai spicy” as we’ve heard it put.

For context, a few of the dishes we’ve tried that we felt like didn’t have any heat at all but would have in restaurants we’ve tried back home:

– crab in yellow curry
– Num Tok
– Pad Kaprao
– shrimp in red curry and dried chili paste

These have been from reputable places, including Raya and One Chun.

Anyway, just wanted to see what if anything we’re doing wrong :)
