Lanterns to illuminate Sukhothai and Tak

Until Nov 27, the iconic Sukhothai Light & Sound Show is turning Wat Mahathat in Sukhothai Historical Park into a magical portal that takes visitors to the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng when krathong were made as a symbol of devotion to the Goddess of Water, as part of the Loy Krathong and Candle Festival 2023.

This show combines historical and artistic elements to showcase the splendour of the Sukhothai kingdom with a great war elephant parade, fireworks and ancient Thai-style lanterns. While strolling about, visitors can take in the nostalgic atmosphere and see a beautiful parade, a retro market, beauty pageants and a krathong competition.

In Tak, the Ping River is illuminated with the release of 1,000 krathong sai made of coconut shells containing a lit candle and flowers. Visitors can also attend a midnight alms giving ceremony and traditional ritual to ward off bad…
