Khao Lak

I have seen a few posts about Khao Lak where people say you need your own transport otherwise it can be pretty boring.

I have 10 days in my 3 week December trip for beach time, I was planning 6 in Phuket for some nightlife and 4 in KL to do Similan and Khao Sok trips. I won’t have any personal transport and don’t like being stuck in a resort in the evening – is there nowhere to walk in the evening e.g. restaurants/bars/ice cream shops along the beach? Is there a specific area to stay where I will have places to walk in the evening?
