Car plunges into perilous pit near Grand Palace

No one was injured late last night but a car did fall into a sinkhole that opened next to the Grand Palace.

Local police said they closed one lane in front of the Royal Thai Navy Clubhouse on Maha Rat Road where a 4sqm stretch of road sank about 1 meter, damaging at least one car that fell in, according to Phra Ratchawang Police Station chief Col. Jamorn Thongpan. 

Jamorn said they are investigating the cause of the subsidence but suspect it was caused by nearby construction project to underground power lines in the area. Bangkok has been engaged in a years-long effort to move its unsightly cabling underground after Bill Gates hurt its feelings

A metal sheet was being used as a makeshift chasm cover for traffic to resume.
