Bangkok taps to pour saltwater until rainy season brings relief

It will be at least three more months before Bangkok’s tap water loses its brackish flavor due to weather conditions.

Storm surges peaking now through March will affect water levels in the Chao Phraya River and delta, which combined with drought conditions, will make for salty water until things begin to improve in April and return to normal with the rainy season in May, water resources official Somkiat Prajamwong said today.

The water remains drinkable to those without any sensitivity to high salt content – and no sense of taste.

To alleviate conditions, he said 500 million cubic meters of water would be released from six dams feeding the Chao Phraya and Mae Klong rivers to lower the salinity that comes with rising sea water backing up into the low-flow waterways.
