In other news the government officially decided on changing the English name of Bangkok to Krung Thep Mahanakon. Bangkok’s official name in Thai (this is the anglicised version) is:
Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit
Locals usually refer to Bangkok as Krung Thep. Bangkok, the English name, is based on just a small part of the city that used to be an important commercial centre in the 17th/18th centuries. Government officials also stated that it will still be ok to say ‘Bangkok’ – it just won’t be the official English name anymore.
What do you think? Can you say Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit…
