The Thai government heavily promotes Thai nationalism, but they never seem to criticize the nations Thai nationalists hate the most.
Thai nationalists tend to hate Cambodia due to culture wars while Thai nationalists tend to hate Myanmar due to historic events.
Even in Thai schools, the events surrounding Burma’s sack of Ayutthaya are pretty stale compared to the Chinese descriptions of the Nanjing Massacre and the Korean descriptions of comfort women. Thai schools teach students about the Khmer influence on Thai culture during the Sukhothai era but they don’t teach their students about the Thai influence on Khmer culture during the Rattanakosin era. Overall, Thai history isn’t overglorified by education curriculums as much as even European countries.
The Japanese, Chinese, and Korean governments constantly criticize each other to boost nationalism and overglorify their histories. Why doesn’t the Thai government do the same even though they want the same results?
