Who is Srettha Thavisin, Thailand’s likely next prime minister?

After three months of political drama and manoeuvring following Thailand’s May 14 parliamentary elections, the country will likely have a new prime minister next week, as the constitutional court cleared the final legal obstacles for a new vote following a challenge by the winning Move Forward Party (MFP).

On Wednesday, the parliament speaker announced that members of the country’s National Assembly will hold a vote for prime minister on Tuesday, August 22.

The scheduled vote brings Thailand a step closer to potentially ending the deadlock that has gripped the kingdom for months, although animosity among younger voters may still linger over the perceived political conspiracy to prevent the country’s most popular politician, MFP’s Pita Limjaroenrat, from getting the premiership.
