Two missing following tour boat capsizing in southern Thailand

Two people have gone missing after a dive tour boat capsized and sank in the Andaman Sea in southern Thailand on Friday, December 22.

The vessel identified as Reggae Queen was underway with 18 passengers and crew when strong winds caused it to overturn just off the Surin Islands National Park near Phang-nga province at around 23:00 local time on Friday.

The crew of a nearby fishing vessel successfully rescued 16 of the tour boat’s occupants.

The Royal Thai Navy and other local agencies are continuing to search the surrounding waters for any sign of two missing female occupants, who have been identified as a Thai crewmember and a British tourist, respectively. Officials believe that, due to the strong currents in the area, the two missing individuals may have been swept away to as far as 111 kilometres from where the boat had capsized.

The UK Foreign Office has confirmed that it is coordinating with Thai authorities regarding the incident while continuing to providing assistance to the family of the missing British tourist.
