Those with high monthly expenses living in Thailand, could you explain why?

From my other thread “Would you leave TH if cost as much as your home country”, a few answer the expensive of them living in Thailand was as much or more than the USA or Western Europe.

I’m curious as to why?

From my (limited) understand, you can find nice places to rent for under $500 in almost all parts of Thailand. Much cheaper if you go outside the cities.

If your expenses are high here, what does most of your money primary go and do you have any option to spend less?
