Thailand’s private bus sector threatens to axe services by 80%

Thailand’s private bus companies have threatened to axe services by up to 80% if the government does not allow them to raise fare prices in line with rising fuel costs.

Twenty-seven of the nation’s private coach enterprises promised they will run a skeleton service of only 20% from July 1 unless the government allowed them to raise fares by 0.59 baht per kilometre.

President of the Thai Bus Business Association, Pichate Jiamburasate, yesterday joined a meeting with private bus company representatives and The Transport Co., Ltd., Thailand’s state-owned bus company, at a restaurant on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road, in Bangkok.

Pichate insists private bus firms can’t operate as usual due to the latest diesel price increase. The average journey last week cost 1,400 baht, and this week it increased to 1,600 baht per trip. And with fuel prices set to increase even further at the end of…
