Thailand’s 2nd known monkeypox case is in Bangkok

Thailand on Thursday confirmed its second known case of monkeypox infection, this time in Bangkok.

A 47-year-old Thai man was being treated Friday at Vajira Hospital in Bangkok’s Dusit district, where he was admitted July 21 with fever, muscle pain, and blisters. A lab test confirmed that he had been infected with the virulent disease, according to Opas Karnkawinpong, director of the Disease Control Department.

In an indication that the disease is spreading locally, the man had not traveled abroad. 

He told the authorities that he had had sexual encounters with other men. Intimate contact haa accounted for the vast majority of infections around the world.There was no link between the unidentified man and a Nigerian who was confirmed to be the nation’s first known case.

The man is under treatment and quarantine at the Vajira Hospital.
