Thailand will Continue to Hire Migrant Workers, Thai Authority Says

National —

Thailand will still hire migrants workers, Mrs. Kanchana Phatrachok, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in response to previous false reports that the country would stop allowing Cambodian and Laotian workers to work in the country.

Mrs. Kanchana said the Ministry of Labor only adjusted the process of hiring migrant workers through MOUs (Memorandum of Understanding) with Cambodia and Laos to make it easier for employers to submit their demands for migrant workers.

Employers can now directly request for migrant workers with the Provincial Employment Offices or Employment Service Centers in Bangkok, without the need to approach the Department of Employment. This did not mean that Thailand would stop hiring workers from the neighboring countries, Mrs. Kanchana said.

She added that for labor from Myanmar, it is still necessary to contact the Department of Employment, however.

Her clarification is also in response to another piece of false news that the Move Forward Party, the political party that won the election, would repatriate migrant workers from neighbouring countries.
