Thailand’s election resulted in an unexpected victory for the progressive, anti-military party Move Forward. However, due to Thailand’s election system, the party faces a difficult path to power. So, what comes next?

Who won Thailand’s election?

Many observers were taken aback when Move Forward, a young, progressive opposition party, won 14.2 million votes, more than any other party and swept all but one seat in Bangkok.

It campaigned on promises to reduce the military’s influence in politics in order to make the country more democratic, to break up the big monopolies that dominate the economy, to expand the welfare system, to modernise the school curriculum, to abolish mandatory conscription, and most sensitively, to reform the strict lese majesty law that shields the king from criticism.
