Thailand’s national police chief, Pol Gen Torsak Sukwimon, visited Pattaya for a brief meeting on Monday, pledging a renewed focus on legal compliance and the implementation of laws on police conduct and the prevention of forced disappearances.
The meeting, held at the Hilton Hotel on January 22nd, was attended by several high-ranking officers in the Royal Thai Police.
Pol Gen Torsak chaired the meeting and emphasized the importance of adhering to the law for both citizens and police officers alike. Specifically, he urged officers to avoid claiming ignorance of the law, especially the newly enforced Anti-torture and Enforced Disappearance Act, as it could erode public trust.
Pol Gen Torsak was referring to a case in which several Thai teenagers were accused of abducting and murdering a mentally ill woman in Sa Kaeo province.
In this case, the teenagers reportedly did not face charges related to the abduction. Meanwhile, two investigators at the Aranyaprathet district police station are accused of torturing the deceased’s husband into falsely confessing to killing his wife.
In response to this, Pol Gen Torsak emphasized that police officers must rely on clear and accurate evidence when conducting investigations, not solely on their personal discretion.
Additionally, the police chief acknowledged the crucial role of the public in scrutinizing police misconduct. The meeting concluded with the police vowing to uphold the law and ensure a fair and just investigative process within the police force.
