Strolling through history

Wat Yannawa displays a replica of a Chinese junk, which was constructed during King Rama III’s reign.

After departing the Skytrain at BTS Saphan Taksin station in the early morning and turning right, I went on a walking tour with my travel companions to explore the final leg of Charoen Krung Road and Thanon Tok, which runs through the lively residential neighbourhoods of Yannawa and Bang Kho Laem.

The roadways transport visitors back to the early Rattanakosin period when the capital was relocated from Thon Buri to the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River. King Rama I allowed a crowd of Mon troops and migrants from the town of Dawei, Myanmar, to settle down in the Yannawa district and allocated the land for cultivation while assigning observers to guard the city walls.
