Senior cop transferred amid ‘extortion’ probe

The head of Border Patrol Police Region 4 in the South has been transferred to an inactive post while an investigation is conducted into claims he demanded payments from his subordinates.

Border Patrol Police (BPP) commissioner Pol Lt Gen Wichit Paksa signed the order reassigning Pol Maj Gen Chaowalit Suksuwan to the BPP’s operation centre.

The probe was launched after a BPP police lieutenant colonel asked the force chief to investigate his commander for abuse of power. He claimed the officer had demanded that the chiefs of 16 police companies and four subdivisions each bring 10,000-50,000 baht to the BPP’s monthly meetings or face punishment.

He said the commander had claimed to have close ties with high-ranking police officers and a deputy prime minister, according to the complainant.
