Sakon Nakhon city

Question for Thais from this province. I am now retired in Isaan and part of my enjoyment is is exploring different provinces in NE Thailand. I have visited 6 provinces and their capitals and always find something interesting to see; however, most of these city’s downtown buildings aren’t aesthetically pleasing to the eye with the plain concrete concrete block building of different sizes with an array of different sizes of shop signs across the 2-3 story buildings along with the sidewalks being for parked cars, motorcycles or displaying the store’s merchandise. The downtown streets built after the 1960’s are usually two lanes with parallel parking. ( Yes, we know the older streets wind around and are narrow because they we’re basically footpaths & paths for village ox carts centuries ago)
What surprised me about Sakon Nakhon city were the amount of wide streets ( boulevards) 4 lanes each way stretching out of the old city center that was once a village. By looking at the style of the buildings, many date back 40-50 years ago. Did this rural city have better planning than other cities in Isaan? Sakon Nakon’s wide, straight streets going out to the suburbs and villages makes the streets in Ubon Ratchathani and other province cities as if there was never any planning. Just curious…
