Safety and Riding a Scooter in Smaller Towns

Hey everyone! Canadian here looking for folks’ honest takes about renting a scooter to get around smaller towns in Thailand where Grab/Taxis aren’t easily available.

My girlfriend and I are in Pai, and we’ll travel through a couple Kohs for a week total.

We haven’t driven a scooter before, and definitely want to take it safe and steady; helmets at all times, sober and slow driving, the works.

Some people we met swear by using a scooter, while others say it’s too dangerous to be worth the risks; a couple we met said they hopped on their scooter and immediately ran into a sand bank, requiring stitches.

I’m just looking for clarity, since reading up on accident statistics spooked us.
– If you don’t recommend a scooter, what is the best way to get around these smaller towns on a budget?
– Is InDrive an alternative?

EDIT: Changed “Agoda” to “InDrive”; still don’t have my apps straight. Also removed “islands” since Koh means Island already; Thai-ing my best to be grammatically correct

EDIT 2: Thanks everyone for talking us off the ledge and your alternatives. We’ll stick to other forms of transit (songthaews, bicycles, taxis, car rentals)
