Imagine being a refugee who’s brand new to the United States and having to work through a medical emergency with a family member in this new land.
That’s what happened to Hsa Win, who was born in a Thailand refugee camp, soon after he came to Akron. He was in his first year at the University of Akron when his mother was hit by a car while she was jaywalking.
She didn’t know English, so it fell upon Win to navigate the hospital system, court system and health insurance system on behalf of his mother after her traumatic accident.
“I was so stressed and overwhelmed” going to the emergency room, dealing with American police and navigating the U.S. court system for the first time, Win said at Balch Street Theatre Nov. 1.
