Question about safety on beaches

Hello everyone!

I am traveling solo to Phuket for a few days before heading to Bangkok. I plan on enjoying the beaches of Paton, Karon Beach and Kata, however I was wondering how about common is theft on those beaches. Would I be safe to leave my towel and bag on the sand while I swim in the water, or should I buy a waterproof bag and keep my belongings with me at all times?
