Possible Scam?

I am a foreigner who has lived in Thailand quite a while now and I have a Thai friend who has approached me for some help. The details are as follows:

Firstly, I have no reason to doubt this individual, yet I still would prefer to do my due diligence.

Their story is that they won a lawsuit against a debtor to reclaim a large debt, but that the debtor has been successfully dodging any repayments until a few months ago a vehicle was taken away from the debtor and is now in possession of the court.

According to them, the court put the vehicle on sale so that the money paid for said vehicle once sold would go towards repaying the debt to my friend.

The problem my friend claims is that after some time the vehicle has still not been sold, claiming that the court will only accept full cash payments on the vehicle and that the price being set is too high for such a restriction. They claim that they need help purchasing the vehicle from the court so that the money paid for the vehicle will be released into their account within a month’s time.

As they do not have the money to purchase the vehicle themselves, they’ve asked me as a last resort to purchase the vehicle from the court with the promise that once the money goes through the court and is sent to their account as payment for the debt owed them, they will purchase the vehicle back from me for the same price.

Their story does sound plausible to me though I do not know much about the ins and outs of debt related lawsuits in Thailand nor have any of my searches on the internet offered me much pertinent information. If anyone could comment on this, I would greatly appreciate it.
