Pinoy chess bets second in Thailand

INTERNATIONAL Masters Daniel Quizon and Michael Concio Jr. led the way as the country bagged overall runner-up honors with 16 gold, 37 silver and eight bronze medals in the 21st Asean + Age Group Chess Championships in Bangkok, Thailand that ended last Tuesday.

Vietnam took the overall championship by amassing 92 golds, 36 silvers and 50 bronzes with a contingent of 165 players while the Philippine delegation had 50.

Players from Brunei, China, Russia, Indonesia, India, Japan, South Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Singapore and Thailand also competed in the meet.

A native of Dasmarinas City, Cavite, Quizon copped gold medals in the Under-20 division in both the individual standard, team and blitz events on top of a pair of silvers in the individual and team rapid events.
