Several Pattaya residents came out to protest against the building of a median strip on Thepprasit Road yesterday, June 25th, saying it would worsen congestion.
Thepprasit Road and its surrounding areas are currently undergoing four development projects which include:
The installation of drainage pipes: This aims to address the issue of flooding in Soi Kho Pai by directing the water towards Soi Thepprasit 7 and 9 to Jomtien Beach.
Underground cable laying: A network of pipes is being installed to accommodate future underground cables. This measure aims to prevent the need for repeated digging.
The construction of road islands: Road islands with a width of 90 cm are being constructed on Thepprasit Road. The pedestrian walkways on both sides have been reduced by 50 cm each to maintain the original size of the road.
The addition of traffic signals at the Soi Kho Pai intersection: This is to reduce traffic accidents.
The whole construction activities are expected to be completed by September 2023, according to city officials.
However, a large group of Pattaya local residents and business owners congregated at a city complaint center on Sunday to oppose the construction of the traffic island at the entrance of Soi 13 on Thepprasit Road.
Mr. Anusit Songkran, a representative of the group, told The Pattaya News that they did not want the additional traffic island because it would reduce U-turns, narrow the road, and worsen congestion.
Although the city officials insisted that the walkways on both sides of the road would be reduced to maintain the original size of the road, Anusit and his group argued it would still slow down the traffic flow, adding the authorities should instead create more U-turns to increase traffic convenience.
Relevant officials accepted the protesters’ complaint and promised they would consider the matter thoroughly. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=–=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
