Pattaya City Vows to Uplift Well-being of Homeless People

Pattaya —

The city of Pattaya hosted an operational study and learning workshop at the Pattaya City Hall on Tuesday (December 12th), focusing on how to develop the well-being of homeless people.

This initiative stemmed from a collaborative effort between the Institute of Asian Studies at Chulalongkorn University, Burapha University, the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, and Pattaya City.

Its aim was to enhance knowledge and coordination among various stakeholders to promote the well-being of homeless populations. The workshop facilitated discussions on addressing the challenges faced by homeless individuals and formulating plans to improve their living conditions.

Mr. Thanawat Tantong, head of the Office of Social Welfare in Pattaya, explained the city’s approach to managing the homeless population. This strategy involves regular on-site inspections, patrolling the beachfront area where homeless people usually stay, and actively responding to citizen complaints.

The city will also address the needs of the homeless individuals encountered during the inspections. According to Mr. Thanawat, if their relatives can be identified and both sides express willingness to reunite with one another, the authorities will facilitate the return home process of the homeless individual.

In cases of illness, individuals will be transported to hospitals and receive further support from the Chonburi Homeless Protection Center.

Pattaya has recently signed several Memoranda of Understandings (MOUs) to strengthen the protection system for vulnerable homeless populations. This collaborative effort involves 12 organizations working together mainly to:

  • Support physical and mental well-being of homeless individuals
  • Enhance their social opportunities
  • Promote their overall development
  • Upholding their human rights and dignity
  • Eliminate discriminatory practices
  • Support social acceptance
