Opening up bank account as dual citizen

Just tried opening up a bank account at SCB and not sure what they told me made sense. I’m a dual citizen, Thai and USA. The bank employer said that I needed a 1 year visa which didn’t make sense as I’m a citizen. I don’t live in Thailand but came to visit and wanted to open an account for the future. Wondering if any dual citizens had a hard time opening up an account when they don’t reside here. Bank was in Sakon Nakhon. Would applying in Bangkok be easier?
