On 1st day of Phuket ‘reopening,’ Thailand reports another record-breaking COVID-19 cases and deaths

While the country marks its first day of the so-called Phuket Sandbox model allowing entries of international travelers, despite some confusion and some clunky process, Thailand on Thursday reported a new record-high of daily coronavirus infections and deaths. 

Thailand this morning confirmed 5,533 COVID-19 infections and 57 fatalities, the highest daily number since the pandemic began in January 2020. 

The crisis hit a new peak despite the 30-day restrictions imposed on Bangkok and nine other provinces including bans on dining-in, limited travels and shutdown of workers’ camps. 

Today also marks the first day the Thai island of Phuket, under the Phuket Sandbox scheme, welcomes tourist arrivals.
