NAB lent millions to companies linked to Rebels associates

A NAB spokesman said the bank did not comment on specific cases but confirmed it had been working with authorities on the matter.

He stressed the bank adopted a “risk-based customer due diligence process”.

“We regularly review our risk appetite for the provision of banking services to specific customers to ensure it complies with regulation and supports long-term, sustainable, business growth,” he said.

Xpress owner Mark Bassal said he had been the victim of “vindictive” actions by NAB and the receiver, as well as allegedly fraudulent actions from one of his employees. He strongly denied police claims of associations with the Rebels.

“I unreservedly reject the claim I am an associate to the Bikie gang,” he said in response to questions. “I have [never been] and never will be a part of a gang.”
