Media meets in desperate need of a fresh look

Listening to pre-tournament player interviews, especially during this week’s US Open, has always been cringeworthy to me.

The same supposedly smart and witty cliche answers to pitched mundane questions is hardly riveting TV.

The qualifications of several of those allowed to ask questions should perhaps be re-evaluated as no one, with a normal portion of brain cells, is interested in players’ favourite food or which football team they support.

The dislike expressed by the players for having to play in a sponsor’s pre-tournament pro-am is well known, as is having to present themselves in the interview area.

The body language and one-word answers are clear indicators that they would rather be somewhere else.

The only people who seem excited about these press extravagances are those who organise them.

Surely tournament hosts and sponsors could come up with something…
