Mark your drinking calendars for a dry Wednesday, Bangkok

A reminder that while this week’s religious holiday is a day off for most, their day-off celebrations should be stocked in advance as it also means a booze ban.

That means no buying booze all day Wednesday for Makha Bucha Day, the Buddhist holiday that lands each year on the full moon of the third lunar month, a prohibition that’s been in place since the military took over eight years ago to make Thailand great again.

Since 2015, government offices and private companies close this and other holy days, and it is expected that there will be no alcohol sold at supermarkets, hotels, and bars.

While the ban is taken pretty seriously, opportunities abound for less scrupulous sellers, of course.
