Japanese-run Thai orphanage bets on resort for its survival


CHIANG MAI, Thailand — A Japanese-operated orphanage that opened near this northern Thai city in 1999 to take care of children who had lost their parents to AIDS is now trying to recover from another pandemic.

Years ago, the orphanage, Ban Rom Sai, went into the lodging business in an attempt to reduce its dependency on donations and be better able to stand on its own financially. It started with a pool and a cottage on an adjacent piece of land, and its recently christened Resort Hoshihana has since grown to 13 cottages and an assortment of facilities.
