I’m planning to start a long trip in Bangkok, would it be a good idea to buy most things there or pack them before?

I am planning to spend the next 6 months backpacking in Asia and will start with 5 days in Bangkok. I have been planning what to bring and a friend suggested just bringing bare essentials and buying most of my travel clothes there because they will be so cheap.

Would this be a valid plan and would clothes be a lot cheaper and of good quality if I were to wait and buy them there?
