Health Ministry denies reports that Cambodia is source of Thailand’s ‘Alpha variant’ COVID mutation

Dr Or Vandine, spokesperson of the Ministry of Health of Cambodia, has denied reports by Thai media that Cambodia is the source of the ‘Alpha Virus’ mutation that is currently rampant in Thailand.

The report, published in The Bangkok Post, said that “The first cluster during the third outbreak of infections was centred on the upscale entertainment district of Thong Lor. The Alpha variant is believed to have spread from Cambodia.”

However, Dr Vandine has denied this, saying that:

“Cambodia suffers from this virus by finding migrants to Cambodia, especially workers returning from Thailand. Thailand has had an outbreak of COVID-19, and workers have been repeatedly returning from Thailand to Cambodia until now .”
