For those who moved (alone) to a semi-remote or smaller city without any other foreigners, what was it like?

Looking to read about experiences from foreigners who moved outside BKK or whatever foreigner friendly city they started in, to an area with almost no foreigner or english spoken.

How did it change your way of life? Do you speak thai fluently now? Do you socialize with the locals?

Preferably you did this alone and without an english speaking thai partner who helped you.
