Fallen Buddha crushes Sisaket man to death

A man was crushed to death yesterday by a large Buddha statue he was delivering to a monk’s funeral.

Police are investigating the site at Wan Nonkead in Sisaket province after two workers were crushed, one fatally, by the 200-kilogram statue meant for a royal cremation ceremony for a revered local monk.

The statue crushed the torso of 40-year-old Saranyu Kanyamai. His colleague Asisak Cahtthasai suffered injuries to his back. They were both taken to Sisaket Hospital for treatment, where Saranyi was pronounced dead.

The plan had been to move the Buddha from the temple’s front pavilion to the interior of the sermon hall. 

Prior to the incident, Nopporn Prompadit, 50, said they had used a truck to transport the Buddha statue.
