Dr. Jane Goodall Urges Immediate Aid For Thailand’s Starving Captive Elephants

Despite animal welfare groups’ efforts to phase out elephant tourism – rides, bathing with them and circus style performances – 245 elephant “camps” still existed in Thailand in March 2020. Once the pandemic hit and the country closed its doors to tourism, more than 3,500 elephants were placed in 24-hour leg and neck chains. Fifteen months later, those who survived are still in chains and near total starvation.

With the financial support of Trunks Up, Save Elephant Foundation got involved one year ago, providing food for more than 1,800 elephants and 1,600 keepers. But, without any assistance from the Thai government, their resources were depleted within months.
