Dark circles can arise from health issues, lifestyle or genetics

DEAR DOCTORS: What causes dark circles under the eyes? I have always had areas of darker skin under my eyes, but as I’m getting older, it has been getting more noticeable. Could it be something to do with sleep, or with my diet?

DEAR READER: Having dark circles under the eyes affects people of all ages. It can cause someone to be perceived as being tired, sad or even ill. In most cases, it’s a cosmetic issue and doesn’t pose a threat to health. It is possible, though, for the appearance of darker skin in the area under the eyes to arise from an existing health problem. This can include asthma, allergies, poor circulation, hormonal shifts, malnutrition, anaemia and diseases that affect the liver or kidneys. Certain medications can also contribute to the appearance of darker skin beneath the eyes.
