Crop insurers look to satellite technology & big data

The Thai General Insurance Association (TGIA) has joined hands with Thaicom to use big data and satellite technology to develop crop insurance.

The association has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Thaicom, a satellite operator and provider of satellite and telecommunication services, to cooperate in this field.

Mr Anon Vangvasu, TGIA president, revealed that at present, Thai farmers face a range of problems, in particular, variable weather conditions and pests.

The association sees the importance and benefits of applying technology to assess crop damage and collecting data via mobile technology, so as to be able to develop a more comprehensive and efficient damage assessment system.
