Cop who killed doctor in crosswalk sentenced to year behind bars

A Thai cop who was speeding on a Ducati when he killed a female pedestrian was sentenced to one year in jail and fined THB4,000 this morning.

Lance Cpl. Norawich Buadok on Monday morning was handed down the sentence after being convicted of fatal reckless driving in the Bangkok Criminal Court just three months after he hit and killed ophthalmologist Waraluck “Doctor Kratai” Supawatjariyakul, 33, as she crossed Phaya Thai Road.

He sustained only minor injuries in the incident, which sparked national soul-searching over road safety.

Bangkok’s Mean Streets: Any hope for actual, lasting change?

His sentence and fine were halved because he admitted to the crime.

Waraluck’s family in February filed a lawsuit seeking THB72 million (US$2.2 million) in damages from the Royal Thai Police and Norawich.
