SALT LAKE CITY — A new missionary training center will be opened in Bangkok, Thailand, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced on Wednesday.

The training center will accommodate missionaries from southeast Asia and other regions, according to a church news release.

It will be an annex of the complex surrounding the Bangkok Thailand Temple, which was dedicated in October. The training center will open in January.

This will be the 10th missionary training center, or MTC, operated by the church, in addition to training centers throughout the world — in Brazil, England, Ghana, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, the Philippines, South Africa and Provo.

The MTCs provide training for missionaries at the beginning of their missions, including teaching training and language training, when applicable. Missionaries spend three to nine weeks in training, depending on the language in which they are assigned to teach.

The Provo MTC teaches over 50 languages, but the others specialize in the languages of the regions they serve. The new Thailand MTC will train missionaries in English, Thai and Russian.
