China defeat Host Thailand, UAE and Afghanistan Secure Wins on 2024 IWBF Asia Oceania Championships Opening Day – IWBF


The Bangkok Youth Center witnessed a thrilling Day 1 at the 2024 IWBF Asia Oceania Championships. With a remarkable field of 20 teams and the largest women’s field ever, boasting 9 teams, the championship promises an electrifying display of wheelchair basketball prowess.

The inaugural game of the day lived up to the hype as UAE sealed a nail-biting victory, leaving spectators on the edge of their seats. In a stunning comeback against the Philippines, UAE clinched the win with a one-point edge, the final scoreboard reading 55-54. The heart-stopping action set the tone for what promises to be an intense and closely contested men’s competition.

New Zealand, making a comeback to the championship after an absence since 2017, faced a tough loss against Afghanistan. Despite a spirited second half, the Kiwis couldn’t overcome Afghanistan’s confident performance, and the match concluded with a final score of 77-37.

The Opening Ceremony of the 2024 IWBF Asia Oceania Wheelchair Basketball Championships added a touch of joy and warmth to the event ahead of hosts Thailand facing China in the final game of the day. Participants from across the region were warmly welcomed in a ceremony attended by the President of the National Paralympic Committee of Thailand, Lieutenant Nayanop Bhirombhakdi. His heartfelt wishes and encouragement set the stage for a fantastic showcase of skill, athleticism, and determination.

As the sun set on Day 1, the physical clash between China and Thailand unfolded as a riveting display of end-to-end action. China stood strong on the court, thwarting Thailand’s hopes of a victorious home opener with a decisive 63-49 win..
