Can Hollywood stars reignite the Red Dragons of Wrexham?

What has already been a bizarre football season in Britain became even more extraordinary this week when it was announced that two American film stars had taken over the struggling Welsh club Wrexham AFC, currently in the fifth tier National League.

The Hollywood duo are Rob McElhenney, best known for his role in Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds.

Quite why they chose Wrexham, who have been playing non-league football for the past dozen years, is not entirely clear.

There is no questioning their enthusiasm and they have vowed to make the club “a global force,” which is a lot easier said than done.

They emphasised they won’t be absentee landlords.

Reynolds promised: “We want to be at the Racecourse Ground as much as possible, as many games as I can make. We want to have a pint with the fans!”
