British Skydiver Plunges to Death from 29 Story Building in Thailand

A British skydiver died on Saturday after his parachute did not deploy during a jump from a 29 story apartment building in Thailand.

Nathy Odinson, 33, planned to jump from the roof of the building in Pattaya, according to The Telegraph.

Video taken by a friend showed Odinson adjusting his equipment before the jump. After he jumped, however, the parachute he was holding did not deploy. Odinson collided with a tree before hitting the ground.

“I heard the sound of the tree and I thought it was a fallen branch hitting the ground,” Kanet Chansong, a security guard near the site of the accident, told the outlet. “A woman screamed so I walked over and realized it was a person. They were dead. I saw that they had jumped from the building.”

Paramedics pronounced Odinson dead at the scene.

Odinson was originally from England. He moved to Thailand and worked at a skydiving school, where he assisted with tandem jumps.

Staff at the Lumpini Ville Naklua apartment building said Odinson had jumped from the complex several times before the accident.

“They were making video content for social media. They had done this before and they knew it was not allowed,” a security guard said.

The accident remains under investigation.

“The parachute that the deceased used to jump malfunctioned and was not centered as expected. He was in a terrible state when we arrived,” Police Lieutenant Kamolporn Nadee told the outlet.

He said the friend recording the jump was brought in for questioning.

Police said they notified the British Embassy in Bangkok of the incident, who will be contacting Odinson’s family.

“We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Thailand,” a spokesman for the Foreign Office told the outlet.
