Bangkok reels under first major soaking of 2021

The heat of several days broke about lunchtime today with the year’s first major rainstorm in the capital, but it wasn’t enough to do any damage, right? 

Wrong! Flooding, power outages and road accidents occurred across Bangkok this afternoon in the wake of the powerful storm which whipped the city with sheets of rain and powerful gusts.

Portions of the Phaya Thai district along Petchaburi Road flooded early Tuesday afternoon after heavy rain pounded downtown districts including Watthana and Khlong Toei. Residents in a gated community on Pattanakarn Road said they lost electricity three times, and reports of traffic accidents have poured in from across the city. 

Traffic was disrupted around Soi Pridi Banomyong 37 after a utility pole and tree were downed.
