Kuala Lumpur: After Thailand and Sri Lanka, Malaysia has considered scrapping entry visa requirements for Indian citizens starting from December 1, according to the country’s Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim. In his speech at his People’s Justice Party’s annual congress in Putrajaya on Sunday, Anwar said that Indian nationals as well as Chinese may stay for up to 30 days visa-free.

The Prime Minister further said that this move would be subject to security screening, Bloomberg said in a report. Malaysia is relying on extra tourist arrivals as well as their expenses to support economic growth. Last month, Anwar presented plans to improve visa facilities in order to promote the entry of tourists and investors, “especially from India and China,”, as per the report.

A few days ago, it was reported that Vietnam is also considering allowing visa-free travel for Indians. The local reports suggested that the Vietnamese Tourism Minister has called for a short-term visa waiver for Indians. The visa-wavering was suggested in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

Recently, Thailand allowed visa-free entry for Indians to boost tourism. As per the official statement by the Thai government, Indians are allowed to travel to Thailand without a visa from November 10, 2023, to May 10, 2024. Indians are also allowed to stay for a maximum of 30 days without a visa.

In Sri Lanka, Indians are allowed to travel to the island nation without a visa till March 31, 2024. This flagship programme was also introduced in order to boost the tourism industry which took a hit after the COVID-19 Pandemic.
