A 91-year-old man died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while cleaning his gun. The man scratched his head with the pistol when it suddenly went off, according to his wife.
The tragic accident unfolded at a residence in the Pong sub-district, Banglamung district, Chonburi province. Nongprue police were notified of the fatal accident at 4 PM on November 21st and rushed to the scene to find a Thai man lying deceased on the floor.
Police identified the body as 91-year-old Jian Wannapong. He was found beside a table at the front of his house, with a gunshot wound to the right side of his head. A .38 Smith & Wesson caliber revolver lay nearby the victim, with six bullets, one of which had been fired. The local rescue team transferred Mr. Jian’s body to a hospital for a postmortem.
According to Jian’s 75-year-old wife, Lamyai Boonchu, she explained that she had been married to the victim for over 50 years. She mentioned that her husband regularly cleaned his gun every two days.
On the day of the incident, Lamyai saw her husband cleaning the weapon as usual. Suddenly, the victim seemed to itch and raised the gun to scratch his ear with the gun barrel. However, the gun was accidentally discharged, shooting Mr. Jian directly in the head and causing him to collapse. Mrs. Lamyai, shocked, immediately notified her relatives and the police.
Pol. Maj. Wachirawit Wisutseriphan, an investigator at the Nongprue Police Station, revealed that an initial investigation pointed to the victim shooting himself by accident while wiping his ear with a gun barrel. Regardless, the body will be sent to the Forensic Institute at the Police General Hospital to undergo a ballistic examination to determine the exact cause of this tragic accident.
