76 Covid convicts make escape bids

Seventy-six inmates have escaped from Covid-19 quarantine at non-correctional facilities and hospitals since October last year, Justice Minister Somsak Thepsuthin said yesterday.

All were quickly recaptured, Mr Somsak said.

Escapes occurred because medical facilities were not properly secured and only had a few people on hand to monitor inmates.

From now on, inmates will only be quarantined within prisons. Some quarters in prison grounds will be turned into isolation wards, he said

Mr Somsak added there were more escapes from medical facilities over the past four months than the rest of the previous year.
